Inter-library loans

Article ordering
If we do not have a book or journal publication that you are looking for, we are able to order articles from another library on your behalf.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Please note that there will be a charge for this service if you are not a BSO member. From May 2008, it costs £7.85 and £3.80 to receive an article from the British Library (BL) and British Medical Association (BMA) Library respectively (asking the BL to carry out a worldwide search for an article costs considerably more). At the moment, these costs are absorbed by the library budget. Each year we order several hundred articles from the BL and BMA libraries, which add up to a significant sum of money. In some cases, these articles are just one page or even only a couple of paragraphs long, so are not value for money.

Therefore, before requesting an article, make sure that you:
· have checked that it is not available already for free: online via PubMed, Google, University of Bedfordshire electronic resources, or in the library already,
· have read the abstract and are sure it will be useful to you,
· are requesting the correct item - article or a comment on an article from the journal's letters page,
· will be able to read the article [non-English articles have titles in square brackets].

WHAT IS AN INTER-LIBRARY LOAN?
Inter-library loans are a way for you to obtain journal articles, books, conference papers and book chapters which the BSO library does not hold. We can gain these items from either the British library, BMA or from the London Health Libraries group. The British Library also enables us to conduct Worldwide Searches which means if the item is not held in this country they will look elsewhere for us.

WHO IS ENTITLED TO INTER-LIBRARY LOANS?
This service is free to students and staff members, though there is a discretional limit of around 10 depending on costs.
In the final year as part of your Individual Enquiry you are also allowed to order an additional 10 articles.

HOW DO YOU REQUEST AN ITEM ON INTER-LIBRARY LOAN?
To request an item you need to give a list to the librarians (or email library@bso.ac.uk) with the full reference of what you need which must contain the following information:
Student note-taking in the Library
· Journal Title · Date · Volume Number · Issue Number · Page Numbers · Article Title · Article Author
or
· Book Title · Author ·  Date of Publication · Publisher

When writing the above information please make sure you email us, print out the details or write clearly.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
Journal articles from the British Library usually arrive within a 2-3 days. If the journal is one the British Library does not hold in its collection it can take longer. Books can take up to 4 weeks, again depending on whether the library holds the book in its collection or not and whether it is currently on loan. Articles from the BMA Library take a week to ten days.

Articles from the London Health Libraries group usually arrive within a week. Some libraries are quicker than others and will return a request straight away.

If you are not a BSO member and you would like us to order any journal articles in advance of your visit, please call or email us with your request (020 7089 5324 or  library@bso.ac.uk). We will post your articles to you when they arrive. Please provide us with your address when ordering your articles.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE IS A DELAY?
If there is any delay with the item requested the British Library will send us a status report to let us know how long the item will take. We can then let you know. We also do regular check ups to make sure that the libraries have got our requests and to remind them to process the request.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE ITEM ARRIVES AT THE LIBRARY?
When articles/books arrive we will send you an email to let you know it is in the library. It is also worth checking in at the desk as well.

CAN JOURNAL ARTICLES/ BOOKS BE SENT TO ME IN THE POST?
If you do need articles/books posted to you we can do this. They will be sent to the library first and then we can send them on which may take a few days longer.

HOW LONG CAN I KEEP THE LOAN FOR?
If your Inter-library loan is a photocopy you can keep it as this is your own personal copy. The British Library lends books out for three weeks and they do have to be sent back by the due date. When getting books from the London Health Libraries group they will have their own deadlines but these are normally a month long.

HOW DO I RETURN INTER-LIBRARY LOANS?
If your Inter-library loan is a photocopy this does not need to be returned. If the item is a book we ask you to return it to us a few days before the deadline so that we can send it to the library in the post so that it arrives on time.

REMEMBER
If you need articles/ books let us know as soon as possible. Do not leave it until the last moment as it can take longer than a week to get hold of items. We get lots of requests when fourth year students are doing their I.E., especially around December. The best advice is to plan ahead and get your requests in as early as possible.
