The Library
Catalogue
The BSO Library is one of the best osteopathic libraries in the world and has one of the most comprehensive collections of osteopathic texts outside the USA. We have state-of-the-art computerised search facilities, WP and statistical packages, and access to medical databases and other useful sites on the internet. We also have a wide range of learning resource materials, specimens and videos; the collection includes imaging records such as X-rays.
We continuously refine the collection to ensure a plentiful supply of key texts and to grow the holding in areas of special interest such as sports medicine.
We hold some 10,000 books, 200 videos and DVDs and take 45 periodicals. See Journals. There is a special collection of osteopathic works, a collection of student projects and reference copies of medical dictionaries, bibliographies, indexes, directories and key textbooks. There are sets of slides, tape/slide presentations, audiotapes and CD-ROMs for use in the library. The library also holds bones, anatomical models and flexi spines. The video library includes film of expert practitioners in action and Manus Sinistra talks.
Current periodicals are on display. Some are shelved in the special collection of osteopathic materials. They are not for loan but may be copied subject to copyright restrictions. For more information see the Journals page.
The BSO Library should have a copy of every text you will need to complete your course. We continually update our collection as new texts are published. All loan copies of books are found on the four bookcases running along the centre of the library. The books and videos are arranged by subject using the Dewey Decimal system. Each bookshelf has subject labels e.g. ‘radiology’, ‘anatomy’ to aid browsing. Any book with an ‘X’ before its class mark is an over-sized book. These are found on the bottom two shelves of each bookcase. Books marked ‘REF’ are reference copies and can be found on the two bookcases nearest the door.
We try to keep our catalogue as up-to-date as possible and continue to add items to it. Books recently added to the collection can be found on the ‘New Books’ stand at the far right hand corner of the library. A list of recent acquisitions can be found here.
We aim to make it easy for you to find the items you seek. If you encounter any difficulties please consult a member of staff.
If there is a book that you would like which we do not hold in the collection.

Useful literature for osteopaths engaging in negotiations with GPs can be found in Research.
How can I recommend a book?
If there is a book that you think we've missed or will be useful to add to the collection you can tell a member of the library staff, or Email the library at library@bso.ac.uk
The following CD-ROMS are available for use. Ask at the issue desk for the one you want to look at and we'll give you the right CD. Please borrow a set of headphones to listen to them.
We have more than 200 Videos DVDs. They are found on the shelving unit in the front right corner of the library. These can be borrowed like a book as normal or are available for viewing in the library. Most are loaned out for 7 days. Don't forget to borrow a pair of headphones. A range of videos is also available via the intranet: see Electronic Resources
There are also sets of slides, tape/slide presentations and audiotapes for use in the library. Please ask at the issue desk.
Models
We have available a wide range of bones, models and flexi spines. They are found on the desk by the filing cabinet and in the large metal cabinet. There is a key to the full skeleton at the issue desk. Contrary to rumour, there is no real human skull!
Projects and Reports (dissertations)
In their final year, every student studying at the BSO has to complete a dissertation. A copy of every student project written since 1989 is available in the BSO library. They are found in the far right-hand corner of the library and are sorted by date and number (most recent in blue plastic racks by the window). Each dissertation is available for a 28-day loan. A list of project titles is available at the issue desk, through the online catalogue and at Research where some are also available electronically.
The Stephen Pheasant Ergonomics library
The collection of books and journals in the side room separate to the main library is the Stephen Pheasant Ergonomics Library. This memorial library was opened in December 2004 by HRH The Princess Royal who is patron of the BSO. It is a comprehensive collection of ergonomic texts and journals alongside related subjects including aesthetics and anatomy. This room is available for use as an area for group study. There is also a television with VCR and DVD player for watching videos and DVDs.
Professor Stephen Pheasant died unexpectedly in March 1996, at the age of 47. He was Honorary Associate Professor of Clinical Ergonomics here at the BSO and also a leading member of the Ergonomics Society. The collection is regularly updated and was kindly donated by his partner Sheila Lee who is an osteopath and ergonomist.
