How to Obtain, Install and Setup/Configure the FirstClass Client

The best way to use FirstClass is to use the FirstClass Client software. It will give you a faster response and more functionality than the web interface. It is available on all BSO PCs and is freely available to install on your home PC.
This leaflet explains how to Install the FirstClass Client on your own personal PC. You may also follow the instructions found via the FirstClass Client Download Area link within the ICT Resources  link at http://intranet.bso.ac.uk.
There are initially four steps to take:

Step1: Obtain the Client Software
Step2: Install the Client Software on your PC
Step3: Setup/Configure FirstClass Client for BSO Use
Step4: Use FirstClass

After you  have done this once you need only do Step4 to use the FirstClass Client.


Step1: Obtain the Client Software

In order to obtain the latest version of the FirstClass Client program, click on the ICT Resources link in left hand menu of links on the BSO Gateway at http://intranet.bso.ac.uk/ and then click on the following link, FirstClass Client Download:  PC / Mac / Linux

This will take you to the following screen which is a subset of links, click on the appropriate link for your needs.  If you are using a PC, select the PC option and so on  There is also a link to the FirstClass Client Downloads Guide, for further guidance.

 Download the file named FC10014UK.exe

Mac version:

Ctrl + click on the appropriate link, select Download Linked File and save the file to your Desktop.

PC version:

Right click on the appropriate link, select Save Target As… and save the file to your Desktop.  



Step2: Install the Client Software on your PC

Windows

Double click on the file you downloaded to your computer's desktop.

Follow the prompts that come up. Let the installer put the software in the default locations.

Click on the Finish button and proceed to the setup instructions.

Mac OS X

Double click on the file you downloaded to your computer's desktop. This will launch Disc Copy which will mount the disk image.

When the disk image is mounted (the icon should look like a white hard drive), double click on this icon. Double click on the Install FirstClass Client icon.

Follow the prompts that come up. Let the installer put the sofware in the default locations.

After the installation has been completed, you will find the FirstClass client icon in your Applications folder. If you so desire, drag the FirstClass client application to the dock.

Proceed to the setup instructions.

Mac OS 9.x (Classic)

Decompress the file you downloaded to your computer's desktop using Stuffit Expander.

Double click on the resulting icon. This should be called Install FirstClass Client.

Follow the prompts that come up. Let the installer put the software in the default locations.

When the installation is complete, proceed to the setup instructions.



Step3: Setup/Configure the FirstClass Client for BSO Use

Double click on your new Desktop icon to Launch FirstClass.

Once you have the Login screen up, click on Advanced and then click on the Setup button:

This will open the following Setup window:

Against the Connect via field notice that there is a drop-down box containing:

If installing on your home computer, make your choice from the top three entries, as appropriate.

In the Server field, make sure it reads: intranet.bso.ac.uk

Once this is done, click on the Configure… button next to
the Connect via window.




On the screen that comes up, make sure the Protocol selected is TCP/IP:

On the Settings tab, make sure the port selected is TCP Default (510). Everything else can be left as it is.

Click on the Save button.

You should be back at the Service Setup screen. Make sure you have the server name entered as intranet.bso.ac.uk.

Click on the Save button.

You have now finished setting up/configuring the FirstClass client to connect to the BSO server.

Step4: Use FirstClass
Enter your User ID and your Password to log in.
