Staff Benefits

The UCO offers a number of benefits to its staff members.

Should you wish to take up any of these benefits, please ask the HR Team for further information.

Simply Heath Healthcare

The UCO runs a corporate scheme with well-known health insurance company Simply Health.

The UCO will pay the basic monthly rate offered as part of the scheme, but we are happy to liaise with Simply Health to arrange direct debits on your behalf should you wish to contribute above this level.

The scheme covers a wide range of treatments such as opticians’ bills, dentistry, allergy testing, health screening, chiropody and acupuncture.  It also pays out on birth of a child.

Partners can be added to the scheme (at an extra charge) and dependent children under the age of 18 are covered for free.

We operate a group personal pension plan with Standard Life and will match your contributions up to 3% of your salary.

All employees with more than three months’ service are eligible to join this scheme.

Childcare Vouchers

We recognise that the cost of childcare in London and the South East is very high, and that this can be a disincentive for parents returning to work after their children are born.

We want to ensure that employees are supported so have introduced a childcare policy entitling anyone who meets the Government’s criteria to a contribution of £55 per week (pro rata), with no tax and NI to be paid.

The scheme is co-ordinated with Sodexho Pass, and childcare vouchers are issued that can be used to pay registered childcare providers (ie childminders or nurseries).

The payment will be made on the basis of £11 per contracted day – so if you work on Thursdays and Fridays you will receive £22 per week. If you work part-days, you’ll receive the pro-rata entitlement.

All you need to qualify for this benefit:
  • You must have a child under the age of 5
  • You must pay a registered provider for the child care
  • You only get the benefit for one child at a time
You can claim this benefit by filling in a simple form and returning it to the HR Office (Room 4.06).

Gym Membership

UCO staff and students can use the staff gym at Guy’s Hospital (London Bridge) at the reduced rate of around £30 per year.

Members will need to pay per session, but this represents a significant saving on central London gym membership.

We also have a reciprocal relationship with the sports centre at London South Bank University, near Elephant & Castle, offering UCO staff full membership (including unlimited use of the 40+ station fitness centre, free weights room and classes) for £125 a year.

Pick up a leaflet from Room 4.06 if you are interested.

Season Ticket Loans

We offer interest-free loans for staff travelling to the UCO on annual season tickets.

These work by taking the cost of an annual season ticket and spreading it across the year through a monthly deduction from your pay.

The benefit to you is that travel operators usually offer substantial discounts for yearly tickets.

Please note that you must repay any outstanding season ticket loan before leaving the UCO.

Osteopathic Treatment

The UCO has a staff and student clinic which runs on Tuesdays, in both term-time and the holidays with treatment provided by a member of the full-time osteopathic faculty.

Although the person holding this post changes occasionally, we try to maintain continuity in staff and student clinic over each term.

There is a waiting list for staff and student clinic, although free treatment is available in general clinic for those on the waiting list.

To book an appointment, please see the Clinic Reception Team.

For non-osteopathic staff, having treatment is a really good way to gain understanding of osteopathy – we recommend it!
